Acid Reflux And The Color of Diet
by Gilbey Scott
There is much to be said for the color of food and an acid reflux diet. As strange as it may be it’s the color of a food that gives it its distinctive healthfulness. I’m speaking of plant foods in this case. It’s easy to pick up a vegetable or fruit and admire the color and look of it even before the first taste.
But unseen is an array of complex chemistry; phytochemicals, flavonoids and many others that may not be identified yet that are working to retard acid reflux.
The dark green family of plants is a good example. A closer look would reveal an abundance of molecular antioxidants and phytochemicals as well as essential minerals that are still being assessed for all their possible health properties.
But their importance for heartburn, acid reflux, healthy bones and teeth has already been identified. In time, it’s quit possible that they will develop a pill that contains all this goodness, but in the meantime we’ll have to keep on eating our vegetables and fruit.
Being able to enjoy a meal, as insurance against illness - how’s that for good news? Even potatoes are on the list. Definitely not the deep-fried variety, which only makes matters worse, but baked or mashed can definitely be a part of the menu to improve acid reflux.
It’s simple changes like this: switching from fried foods to lightly cooked or steamed that can make the difference. An acid reflux diet doesn’t have to rule your life; it’s really just a matter of making some practical decisions. And with the cost of medical care these days, it seems like a healthy diet has a lot of advantages
When planning a healthy diet be sure to include foods from all the color groups. All can contribute to the acid reflux diet as well as other healthy benefits. Red, for instance, promotes heart health with anthocyanins and the well-known lycopene. Orange and yellow are loaded with antioxidants and vitamin C while eggplant, blue berries and plums, of the blue purple group, are thought to reduce some forms of cancer.
Take a few minutes each day to put on paper everything you eat and drink. After a week divide them into categories to see how heartburn friendly your diet is. In one column list all the servings of fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.
In the other column put everything else. This second category is the acidic foods you’ve eaten. These are foods that can cause acid reflux or make it difficult for the body to correct over acidity.
If you want an acid reflux diet that can put an end to this discomfort start by making some healthy rules. The first should be that there needs to be at least one serving of vegetables with every meal and make it a habit of fruits for snacks.
Remember the really good ones are dark colored; so don’t forget kiwis, the tasty fruit you can eat with a spoon. Keep in mind that plants are the primary source of all minerals in the diet. These minerals are derived originally from the earth and make their way into the food supply via plants.
